Mini dental implants involve the use of a small metal or titanium rod that is implanted into the jaw bone. The bone is allowed to grow around the post, securing it in place permanently. A small portion of the post will protrude above the gum line, allowing for a dental crown or fake tooth to be attached to it. The crown can be made of gold, ceramic or porcelain and is designed to look exactly like the tooth it replaced. Mini dental implants are used for both cosmetic purposes as well as a means to hold the other, surrounding teeth in place after a tooth has been lost or broken.
Mini dental implants are often used for cosmetic reasons. They offer the most benefit when it comes to keeping teeth in their original positions. When a tooth, or teeth, are lost, the teeth on either side of the opening tend to gravitate towards the hole. This primarily occurs because the teeth are firmly pressed together. Once the pressure is released, the teeth will gradually begin to shift and eventually cause disruptions in alignment and bite patterns. Using a mini dental implant to take the place of the lost tooth or teeth, creates a firm abutment that holds the teeth where they belong. Once the metal post has been put into place and secured by the jaw bone, the area is re-stabilized and the mouth continues to function as it should.
With the latest innovations in technology, mini dental implant procedures can be performed in less than an hour. Dentists now have the capability to perform many different procedures in a fraction of the time they used to take in the past. What took two or three visits to complete in the past, has been reduced to a 60-minute procedure that causes minimal discomfort and shortened healing times. The implantation of the stent into the jawbone and the addition of the crown require only a modest amount of anesthesia and will allow the patient to have complete restoration with only one visit.
