Dentures are fitted in two different ways. They can either be made according to molds taken of the person's original teeth and how they were situated within the mouth itself, or the dentist can have the teeth made and then fit them into the mouth immediately after pulling or excising the person's real teeth. If the last option is chosen, the gums are made to heal according to the form of the denture itself. The first option allows the gums to heal prior to the first time the dentures are placed in the mouth. Situations can arise that make one type of fitting more beneficial than the other, but the final choice is normally left to the dentist and the patient.
Even if a person has not had their own teeth for several years, regular yearly checkups are still encouraged by most dental professionals. Changes in gum tissue can be indicators of other health conditions within the body, including diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and conditions involving the circulatory system. Annual checkups are also beneficial in showing dentists potential problems with dentures, such as how they fit, possible cracks, or visible wear and tear. Dentists will also perform oral cancer screenings and check for potential problems with breathing that may involve sleep apnea.
If a person begins to notice that their dentures no longer fit properly, they may want to discontinue wearing them until they can pay a visit to the dentist. Dentures that slip, shift, or lose grip may need to be refitted. Gums will tend to shrink over time causing dentures to become ill fitting. As the dentures begin to move or shift while a person is eating or speaking, lesions and open wounds may appear that make wearing the dentures extremely uncomfortable. The dentures should not be worn again until steps have been taken to restore proper fit and the lesions or abrasions have been allowed to thoroughly heal.
