Dental implants are the most natural-looking replacements for missing teeth.
Dentures are often uncomfortable and difficult to secure; they may slip out when eating, talking or sneezing. Implants are a permanent and secure alternative for patients who need dental restoration.
Implants are surgically embedded into bone, much like natural teeth. One of the dental professionals at ReHoBoth Health Network and Family Dentistry secures a metal post into the bone. The post protrudes up through the gum tissue and serves to hold a prosthetic and custom-designed tooth. The fake tooth installed on the post stays in place, unlike dentures which come out every night.
You can brush implants just like you would a natural tooth. Since the prosthetic tooth is custom-made, it fits perfectly into the gap left by the natural tooth.
Like the regular dental implants, mini-posts are made from titanium. They consist of the post that screws into place in the jaw, a ball on the end of the post, and a socket with an “O” ring that serves to attach the tooth.
Regular implants are approximately 3.4 to 5.8 mm in width. The minis are 1.8 to 3.3 and from 10 to 15 mm long.
The most prominent difference, beyond the size of the post, is the time it takes to secure it. On average, you can expect a standard dental implant to take several months to complete. Often, you need to undergo additional invasive surgery to be a candidate for this dental treatment, too, such as a bone graft to support the jaw.
Your ReHoBoth dentist installs the mini implants with just one visit. They also work for patients who don’t qualify for the traditional implant treatment. Fewer appointments mean lower costs, too.
