When it comes to cosmetic dental procedures, teeth whitening is easily the most popular among our patients. That’s not surprising when you consider the positive effect it can have on your smile.

Here at  ReHoBoth Health Network and Family Dentistry, we often encourage our patients to proceed with teeth whitening because of the benefits it offers. We also suggest you choose professional whitening rather than over-the-counter methods for several reasons -- and some of them may surprise you.

Benefits of teeth whitening

  1.  It can help others see the real you

Yellowed or stained teeth can often make you self-conscious and keep you from participating in conversations or laughing freely during social events. It’s hard to introduce yourself to the world when your first instinct is to cover your smile or avoid opening your mouth. A bright, white smile can eliminate those worries and help you relax, whether you’re one of a crowd or half of a party of two.

  1.  It’s a quick and affordable cosmetic procedure that can make you look younger

Even when you’re still young enough to look forward to your next birthday, discolored teeth are often associated with aging. Whitening can shave years off your smile and leave you feeling vibrant and young enough to enjoy your party, no matter how many candles adorn your cake.

  1.  It can help you achieve your goals

Whether fair or not, your smile often affects how others perceive you. A survey done by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists reports that 48 percent of the respondents noted that after a first encounter, they are more likely to remember your smile than what you were wearing, how you smelled, or what you said.

Discolored teeth are not the characteristic most of us want to be remembered by, especially when it comes to a job interview or when you’re trying to make a good impression at an important social gathering or public event.

  1.  It may help you remember to take good care of your teeth

A bright smile that increases your confidence, helps you make a good first impression, and keeps you looking as young as you feel is an asset worthy of protecting. And we tend to take better care of those things we cherish. Daily brushing and flossing, as well as routine trips to your dentist for exams and professional cleanings, may become less forgettable when you experience the value of a vibrant, white smile.

Why we recommend professional teeth whitening

  1.  We know your teeth better than you do

Over-the-counter (OTC) tooth whitening products generally fall into two categories: gels that lighten your surface tooth color and abrasives (toothpastes) that polish away surface stains. If you’ve had previous dental work, such as fillings or root canals, lightening the surface of your teeth may highlight the materials used during a restoration process and make their different color more noticeable.

It’s also important to remember that crowns and veneers don’t respond to whitening products. Your dentist can determine whether your teeth will respond as expected to the treatments. We can also identify soft or eroded enamel that abrasives may worsen or gum damage and other oral health issues that require attention before we attempt whitening.

  1.  Professional whitening is fast, and the results are reliable

It typically takes one visit and about one hour to successfully lighten your teeth when you choose our in-office whitening. Many OTC bleaching products will eventually work but often require twice daily use over a period of two weeks before you note results. Most of these products can only brighten your teeth by one to two shades, while our professional-strength products can lighten your teeth by 8-10 shades with only one session.

  1.  We can customize your treatment

We’re able to tailor your treatment so that your teeth lighten to a shade that complements your skin tones and looks natural. We also treat each tooth individually. OTC kits typically provide generically-sized trays or strips that may not fit well and prevent even distribution of the whitening solution across your teeth. This can leave some of your teeth lighter while others remain darker.

  1. In-office treatments are probably more budget-friendly than you think

The results from an in-office whitening treatment can last for a year or more. We can also recommend professional-strength products, such as bleaching pens, that you can use at home for cost-effective touchups between visits.

Many of our patients report frustration over the money they’ve spent and the time they’ve wasted using OTC products that didn’t provide the results they expected. We can take the guesswork out of the process and spare you a “trial-and-error” approach to that bright smile you’re craving.
